Portfolio Reviews! I had 2, with Bruce Myren and Ariel Shamberg from The Center of Photography at Woodstock. Bruce had a couple suggestions for me, one being to focus on my thread, something to bring the pictures together within my Detachment Series. He saw similarities from this Walker Evans image to one of my own. He also suggested reading Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard and bringing more meditation into my practice. He said my statement was better articulated than my words. opps.

Ariel Shanberg had offered constructive advice while offering a curator's perspective. He suggested more interior moments, with the figure obstructed (of course). He also mentioned Akemi Hiatt's roadtrip project called A Westerly Direction. He mentioned a couple of shots in particular he'd like to see in this group with the bicycle more involved.

Anne Whiston Spirn had a lecture that I attended on The Power of a Book to Change its Author: Dorothea Lange and An American Exodus and she mentioned that she had received a grant to experience the same landscape as Dorothea Lange did in 1938 and 1939. Lange's book The American Exodus was mentioned a few times in the conference.

Mary Virginia Swanson was a whirlwind of information in her lecture entitled To Be Published or Self-Publish? An Overview of Option for Artists. "Swany" shamelessly plugged her own book called Publish Your Photography Book in her lecture at the conference. Books that she suggested are: The Photo Book A History Vol 1. and 2, The Americans by Robert Frank, There Was A Forest by Loli Kantor, and Hackney Witt by Stephen Gill. She also mentioned different publishers: Trolley(dark), J&L Books(fun), Princeton Arch Press, Lumiere Press, Nazraeli Press, Tin Roof Press, Ram,, DAP(young), University of Texas Press, and University of New Mexico Press. Publishers showcase in photoeye.com. She mentioned that Gerhard Steidl accepted no unsolicated titles for publication last year in reference to this article: Bound for Glory. David Taylor's Working the Line is packaged with a 44-page accordion-fold booklet deal that is relatively inexpensive on Amazon. There is Nothing Beautiful Around Here by Paccarik Orue was also mentioned. Philip Zimmerman's book Sanctus Sonorensis because he's distributing his own book. Jason Eskenazi had a couple mentions with his books Wonderland and The Black Garden (available through his website!). Kickstarter.com was mentioned with this Bloomberg article. Allison Smith has a mighty fine website, but her zines were mentioned in Swany's presentation. Dan Milnor uses blurb. Magcloud.com is another place where you can make your own books and it's "so easy". Laura Noel's Free Fall. Elijah Gowin has a 3 books. Lee Friedlander has a youtube video of the book America By Car. Lisa M. Robinson's book, Snowbound used the publisher, Kehrer Verlag. The NYC Book Fair is the place to be if you're in art publishing. Paula McCartney's Field Guide to Snow and Ice and William Eggleston's The Democratic Forest was mentioned.
Random info: Securing an exhibition tour will help you package your book to publishers. Packagers stay on board for the life of a title.

I hopped on a greyhound in early September.
Ended in Durango, C.O.
Stayed in this bus for a week and a half, until one night a guy opened the back door. He thought he was staying there too.

I moved indoors.

If the doors were left open, the goats would wonder in.
They destroyed a plant upstairs.

Lessons from Durango, Colorado

Don't wear sandals on a walk - there are cacti.
Don't patch over a patch on a tube (for a bicycle). And sometimes, taking other peoples' tubes is the best way to fix a flat.
Leave valued items out of range from the patch of grass that "needs" watering.
One way or another people are going to offer to give you a ride out of town in a car.
Get tracking numbers for any items shipped to the Durango post office, in addition to knowing the postal carriers name.
Fruit fly traps are helpful in the kitchen.
Goats need to be tied up to not walk through the house (and for controlled grazing).
Love on second hand stores - and consignment sections of sports stores.
When the sun goes down, make sure you have warmer clothes nearby!
Metal songs are the best when averaging around 30 seconds.
Make bicycle into the best condition as possible before attempting to leave on bike tour.

Northeastern Summer

I've been hanging around the northeast all summer, taking pictures, riding my bike, and in general, loving life. I will soon be headed to Colorado, with no immediate plan of returning to the northeast. My bike and camera will definitely be there. Pictures to come by the end of the year.

I arrived in Montreal on May 15th. There's a touch of the USA and a touch of Europe. It might be my happy medium.

America to Montreal transition:
Parking. If you have a car, learn the days of the week, in french, and pay attention to parking signs!!! All parking tickets in Montreal are $42. :( Now they are bilingual and you can pay them online.
Public Transportation. The metro(subway) stops at 1am. Some buses run all night I think. (google maps, public transportation is my best friend)
Bicycling. It's fun and pretty easy. Pay attention to the cars parked as well as the cars driving. In theory, you're supposed to obey all traffic laws. Bike Paths

Public Restrooms. Occasionally in downtown, or in the Metro there will be some, however, in the plateau, only restaurants will let you use the bathroom.

Food.
The Jean-Talon Market, known for being less expensive. There are 2 other markets down near the old port and water are more expensive. Buying in bulk is sometimes cheaper, rather than 1 pepper, you can buy 4 for cheaper (i don't get it).
Metro is a name of a Grocery Store. They have nutella.
Depanneaurs sell alcohol and drunk food, also the essentials like milk. They are on every corner and are very convienent.
They also have good bread, like the french.

I'm back in Syracuse and still unemployed for the most part. I was originally trying to get a job in the photography field, and then childcare, and now I'm out of ideas. I have an unpaid internship type deal with Andrea Casey. And I'll be taking care of her kids periodically. Andrea Casey's Website . I hope with this, I'll get a wedding portfolio started and get a move on with this photography deal. She's really nice and is going to let me shoot and everything. I got a new lens for my Nikon D80, it's an 18-55 3.5f and i like it.

I've been thinking more about using photography to make money. How to market my pictures. How to advertise..?

So, I posted a 'ad' on craigs list, mainly for weddings over the summer. I've gotten one response so far, for July 5th. I feel like when I'm first starting out, I shouldn't charge much, since I am at their mercy (kind of) for expirence with their wedding.

I've also been shooting solely with the D80 for the past week or so. Went out to the old quarry with evan.. took a few good pictures. Using mainly the new 50mm, 1.8f lens I got.

Recently, I haven't had as much down time.

My prints are significantly worse in my opinion... dark and crappy. Not quite sure why i let this new professor dominate me the way i do. This one girl hasn't come to class since the first day because she didn't want to print like he wants her to.. I didn't like her anyway. She was stuck up.

Studio is getting easier, or I'm just getting used to sucking at it. I'm thinking it's the later.

I got a Nikon D80. Still trying to figure it out for the most part. I've found that one of my lenses works with autofocus. It's hard to get the manual focus to work.. I like the steam in this picture a lot.

Quality of Light

The light in this shot I really appreciate. The picture is lit by multicolored christmas lights and a macbook. The wall right behind the highlighted girl is the place in the photo i like the most.

Artist Expirences

I came home and I got my friend to teach me to shoot a gun. It was an interesting expirence. I am glad that I could do it. I shot a pumpkin. haha go me! The sound was butchered in the conversion. :(

This is my favorite picture from today. I like how it's blurry I think. The tree line and the clouds make it - obviously. But, I feel like it needs to be in color or my friend wouldn't be as prominent in the photograph.

I've been learning more and more that to me, my photography has a lot to do with expirences.

Tones with Flourescent Lighting

After working on this print for a long time, I am not sure what to do anymore. I put it up for crit last wednesday for Portrait with Joanne Walters and I got the comment that i should put more tones in her face. How would I go about doing that anyway??? It doesn't help that this was lit with fluorescent lighting.

Museum of Natural History

Today I went to the Museum of Natural History in NYC. The subways were closed and it took forever to get there. I had to write a paper about something about North American Native Arts there - I chose this costume from the Northwest Pacific Coast section. It said in the description that this was supposed to be a bear - i see more of a wolf. Yeah, so I did this little pen drawing from it.

Color Film Photography

In crit today, i was told to enlarge this photo(from a 4x6). It's actually in color but every time i scan it my scanner decides that it looks better in black and white. I can't wait to take color 1 so i can enlarge them myself. I don't know about going to CVS for enlargements. :-\

Making Pictures

I like the feeling that clouds, fog and steam give.

Light and Shadow? Mood and Emotion?? I don't really like the grain that shows up on the 11x14 print of this picture. But everyone else I show it to likes it. I think i'll put it up for crit? I am tired of not getting any real criticism besides the technical stuff and the lack of theme. No one said the prints had to work together on the wall. And I know what's wrong with the technical stuff usually; time is a factor.

Veterans Day Drive

I was going for mood and emotion here.. the roses in the trash bin are too discrete. Really disappointed. Veterans Cemetary on Long Island. L.I. is pretty interesting to me, I'd like to find more time and take more pictures there. Seems faded and run down. I hope to find more places like this.
I don't like driving because it takes a lot out of expirencing the place.

Printing Lighter

I took this picture last April in Vienna. Looking at the negative, I thought this would work for light and shadow. I decided to try to print a little lighter and with less contrast than i usually do. I think it was successful.

Dark Darkness

I had to use wicked slow shutter speed in these lighting conditions but I think they came out okay. I hope to spend more time working on long exposures. Especially outdoors. I've only expiremented with them in my first photo 1 class (this is #3).

Cell Phone Pictures

Cell phone pictures turn out crappy. I can't wait to get my digital SLR. The colors were way off in this. They still look a little strange to me, not to mention how blown out the highlights are. This could've been a really cute picture with the right exposure.

Flash Photography

Sometimes I like the harsh flash that make people look sickly and weird. I saw some of Sam Brahman's pictures and he shoots a lot with the harsh flash. Overall, i don't think it's my thing. I like using existing natural light.

Tones

This scanned in a little dark. I like the worn brick that is found on old New Hampshire buildings. It makes for a good background for this photo i think - full of texture. It's difficult for me to get candid posed photos. This was the least posed out of all i took of him.
The tones in this shot are nice. I hope to get more negatives with tones like these. It's crazy because it was a bright sunny midday shot - in between buildings.

Mirror Tree

Mirror Tree. I love all the little art projects that people have done out in the woods around campus. The mirror tree is a neat expirence. It's in front of a stream, you need to cross the stream to get over to it. The light in the mirrors are echoed in the light coming through the trees. Right now these are 4x6 prints, i should print them larger but I am running out of paper.

These pictures from NYC scanned in together(unintentionally). I liked the contrast of subject matter but simular composition. I haven't really spent much time in the city ever. I really hope that I can capture more there.
